“This is an important lesson to remember when you’re having a bad day, a bad month, or a shitty year. Things will change: you won’t feel this way forever. Sometimes the hardest lessons to learn are the ones your soul needs most. After all, you can’t truly be happy if you’ve never known pain. You can’t truly feel joy if you’ve never felt heartbreak. You can’t know what it’s like to be filled unless you’ve been empty.”
I once Skyped my friend in the midst of a very hopeless time in my life, and she told me, “Things may be dark right now, but I know things won’t be like this forever.” And even though at the time it didn’t feel that way at all, today I’m pulling over to the side of the road and looking back on my life, and I realize that in hindsight she was right. Those days of hopelessness, of depression and brokenness are now just tiny specks of dust in the distance. I wish I could tell you a fix-all cure that will take away all your bad days and emotional breakdowns. There really is none. All I can tell you is that those days will come – days where it may be so hard to get out of bed in the morning, days where all you want to do is curl in a ball and cry, days where you may feel like the loneliest person in the world – but the trick is to keep breathing. Keep trusting in the light in front of you, no matter how dim, because it will lead you home. And always, always keep pushing forward, though it may hurt to do so. You will see better days and you will one day look back and see how far you’ve come – promise.
